West Hartford, CT Trash & Recycling: Collection Schedule (2026)

Chapter 94, Garbage, Rubbish and Refuse, was adopted September 28, 1976, and § 94-5, 'Residential, condominium, private school, church and synagogue collection,' has since been amended in 1981, 1990 and again September 13, 2016. It guarantees weekly service, on a schedule the Department of Public Works sets, to residential property with fewer than four dwelling units and to condominium premises, a term cross-referenced to the state's condominium and common-interest-community statutes. For condominiums specifically, the Director of Public Works has discretion to determine and revise the means and methods of collection, allowing different staging or routing than single-family curbside pickup.

Properties with four or more dwelling units and commercial or industrial premises fall outside § 94-5's weekly guarantee; an editor's note under the section records that the 1972 Code's separate provisions for private schools, churches, synagogues, and for commercial and industrial collection and fees, were repealed in 1981, folding those categories into the Department's general rulemaking authority under §§ 94-6 and 94-7. The Department, defined in § 94-1 as Public Works acting through its Director or designee, administers the day-to-day schedule, and § 94-9 assigns the Director of Public Works, or a designee, responsibility for enforcing the chapter's collection rules alongside other Town department heads.
