Gainesville, FL Trash & Recycling: Dumpster Rules (2026)

Section 27-75 of the Gainesville Code of Ordinances governs how commercial dumpsters and shared roll-off containers are placed and serviced. Any commercial generator must contract with a city-franchised hauler for garbage collection frequency and method, but two adjacent businesses can split one dumpster if the shared container sits within 500 feet of each generator's service door (or farther with city manager approval) and at least one of the businesses already has a franchisee agreement covering that dumpster. Businesses relying on a sharing arrangement must hand over proof of the deal to the city if asked.

Collection generally happens at least once a week with no holiday exception, though a holiday pickup can be rescheduled with written notice; compactor-serviced containers are exempt from that weekly minimum, and non-compacted commercially-collected residential accounts need at least twice-weekly pickup. Bars, grocers with fresh food, and restaurants can't let food waste sit in an uncompacted container more than two consecutive working days. Storage areas must stay neat and sanitary, and customers who block access to their own container and cause a missed pickup are in violation.

Containers can't be filled above the rim, and any furniture, appliances, or construction debris left beside a dumpster has to be picked up within seven days or the city can order removal and bill the property's utility account. Every dumpster needs a visible serial number, and by October 1, 2023, it also needed the city's approved color-and-label scheme. Solid waste containers can never sit on the traveled portion of a street, walk, or alley without prior authorization from the city manager or designee. If a franchisee misses scheduled pickups, the customer has 30 days to switch haulers before facing a citation.
