Full Breakdown
Akron's Codified Ordinances do not list holidays anywhere in Chapter 52. Section 52.13 hands the job to the department: "The Director of Public Service shall establish rules and regulations governing the curbside collection program, in order to effectuate the intent of Council as set forth in Sections 52.09 through 52.12 and consistent with such sections." The holiday calendar therefore lives in the City's own published schedule, not in the code text, and the quotation above comes from the City of Akron Trash and Recycling web page (Public Works Bureau), Holiday Delays section.
That page names six delay holidays: New Year's Day (January 1st), Martin Luther King Jr. Day (January 19th), Memorial Day (May 25th), Labor Day (September 7th), Thanksgiving Day (November 26th) and Christmas Day (December 25th). On those days collection is not performed, and it is "delayed one day for the remainder of the week." The City's 2026 Curbservice Program mailer, issued by the Department of Public Service, Bureau of Public Works, Sanitation Services Division, prints the same list with weekdays: Thursday, January 1, 2026; Monday, January 19, 2026; Monday, May 25, 2026; Monday, September 7, 2026; Thursday, November 26, 2026; and Friday, December 25, 2026. It adds that "Trash collection will not be delayed on any other holiday." The web page says the same thing about Juneteenth: there is no trash or recycle delay for that holiday.
The service covers one, two, and three family freestanding residential units, with collection once a week. Residents find their collection day on the City's interactive Collection Day Map, and problems or extra carts go through 3-1-1 from a landline or (330) 375-2311 from a cell phone.
A note on the year. Both documents are the 2026 calendar. The mailer prints the year on every date, while the web page lists the dates without a year and calls them upcoming dates. Neither document prints a January 1, 2027 date, so this page cannot confirm a New Year's Day 2027 shift. Check akronohio.gov for the current year's list before planning around any holiday after December 2026.
Violations & Fines
Neither the holiday list nor Chapter 52 attaches a penalty to the holiday schedule. The practical cost of ignoring it is a missed collection: carts set out for the normal day on a delay holiday are not emptied until the shifted day. The mailer also states that only City-issued carts are serviced and that the City reserves the right to refuse or revoke service at any time. Report a missed pickup to 3-1-1 or (330) 375-2311.
