Kalamazoo, MI Trash & Recycling: Holiday Pickup Schedule (2026)

Section 15A-20.1A sets Kalamazoo's five weekday curbside collection areas, one area per weekday, and then carves out a holiday exception allowing companies to 'engage in curbside collection service on a one-day-late schedule (which would permit Saturday pick-up)' when one of six listed holidays falls Monday through Friday: New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. Practically, if a listed holiday lands on, say, Wednesday, that day's Area 3 route and every subsequent day that week can slide one day later, ending in a Saturday pickup for the area that would ordinarily be served Friday.

The City Commission made this holiday schedule effective January 1, 2009, by ordinance amendment. The same section otherwise binds every garbage or rubbish collection company operating in the City to its assigned area and weekday under Subsection A, restricts overnight collection within 300 feet of a dwelling between 11:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. under Subsection B, and allows back-door service on any day under Subsection C regardless of the holiday shift. Because the ordinance uses permissive language, a collector is not compelled to delay service for a holiday, but any company that does delay must still follow the article's other requirements, including cleaning up spilled debris under Subsection D and marking supplied containers under Subsection E. Violations of the collection schedule, holiday-shifted or not, are enforced under § 15A-21.
