Asheville, NC Trash & Recycling: Pickup Rules & Schedules (2026)

Sec. 15-45(a) collects household garbage and trash once each week at curbside for customers not on automated service, capped at six approved receptacles per the solid waste manager's schedule; subsection (b) limits automated customers to only their city-owned rollout container. Oversized household trash under subsection (c) is picked up on a schedule the customer must arrange in advance by contacting the sanitation division. Commercial establishments get the same structure in subsections (d) and (e): six-receptacle weekly limit if not automated, rollout-only if automated. Subsection (f) requires anyone leasing or supplying bulk containers, detachable containers or portable packing units to keep them safe, serviceable and sanitary, and subsection (g) sets specs for privately purchased roll-out containers used on non-automated service: 80 to 100 gallon capacity, a hinged lid, and a design that rolls easily when full.

Subsection (h) lists what the city will never collect: industrial waste, hazardous or highly combustible refuse, large dead animals (owner's responsibility), construction and demolition building materials, and corrugated cardboard, which goes through the recycling program instead. Hauling vehicles must be watertight with a tight-fitting cover under subsection (i), and subsection (j) bars spilling loads of dirt, crushed stone or coal onto city streets.
