Asheville, NC Trash & Recycling: Yard Waste Collection (2026)

Section 15-38, in Chapter 15's Article II on storage and collection, sets separate handling rules for brush trimmings and leaves. on the Monday of the collection week the solid waste manager sets, and cannot be piled on storm drains, under utility guy wires, or around utility pedestals or meter boxes. If placed in a reusable brush container, that container cannot weigh more than 50 pounds when full, cannot hold rainwater, and must be marked 'brush' or 'leaves'; biodegradable paper yard waste bags of brush cannot weigh more than 25 pounds.

The city will not collect any tree trunk, stump, branch, limb, or shrubbery trimming larger than six inches in diameter, longer than four feet, or heavier than 50 pounds, and thorny vegetation must be cut to two-foot lengths and piled separately from other trimmings. Grass clippings are excluded from both the brush trimmings and leaves definitions in § 15-1 and are never collected with either. curbside deadline to leaves, which must go in the same approved paper bags or marked reusable containers, filled no higher than the rim, and kept from blowing onto streets or neighboring property.

Subsection (g) separately excludes all brush and trimmings generated by paid landscaping, tree service, or land-clearing contractors from city collection; that debris is the contractor's own expense to remove. The section derives from Ordinance No. 3625, adopted in 2008, and was last amended by Ordinance No. 4993 in January 2023.
