San Bernardino offers weekly trash, recycling, and organics collection. Carts must be curbside by 6:00 AM on pickup day and returned out of public view within 12 hours after collection per Municipal Code 8.24.
San Bernardino Municipal Code Chapter 8.24 and implementing regulations from the Integrated Waste Management Division govern residential solid waste collection. Single-family homes are issued three wheeled carts: a black 96-gallon trash cart, a blue 96-gallon recycling cart, and a green 96-gallon organics cart for food scraps and yard waste as required by SB 1383. Collection is weekly on a schedule assigned by address, with routes published on the city website and the city waste app. Carts must be placed at the curb with wheels against the curb and lids closed by 6:00 AM on collection day, or the night before if placed out no earlier than 6:00 PM the prior evening. After pickup, carts must be removed from public view within 12 hours. Carts may not block sidewalks, handicapped ramps, fire hydrants, or mail boxes. Scavenging from recycling carts is prohibited under Public Resources Code 41950 and Municipal Code 8.24. Contaminated carts are subject to tagging and possible refusal, and the city may escalate repeat issues to a 65 dollar administrative citation. Extra trash that does not fit in the cart requires a bulky item pickup appointment or a temporary roll-off bin, which are scheduled through Integrated Waste at (909) 384-5335. Multi-family properties with five or more units and businesses receive bin service through private contracted haulers under citywide franchise agreements.
