Clifton, NJ Trash & Recycling: Recycling Requirements (2026)

Section 261-15B spells out how each recyclable stream must be packaged for curbside pickup or drop-off at the City recycling center. Aluminum cans and steel cans must be drained, rinsed and crushed and placed in a reusable container between four and 32 gallons, kept separate from other materials. Glass bottles and jars follow the same container-size rule but must additionally be separated by color, brown, green and clear only. Newspapers and magazines must be bundled at no more than 40 pounds per bundle, tied with string or cord or bagged in sturdy paper.

Grass clippings go in a seven-to-32-gallon container or biodegradable paper bags only, never plastic bags. Corrugated cardboard must be bundled to no more than three feet in length and 50 pounds per bundle and brought to the recycling center. 50 per car tire without rim to drop at the public works yard, and white goods must have doors removed and, for refrigeration equipment, a certified technician's freon-removal certificate before the City will collect them. on collection day itself, a narrower window than the general garbage set-out rule in Section 261-10.
