Grand Prairie, TX Trash & Recycling: Recycling Requirements (2026)

Section 26-114 of the Grand Prairie Code of Ordinances governs how recyclables move through the city's collection system. Any person, firm or corporation collecting recyclables in the city may not collect material that has been mixed or commingled with garbage, and any residential or commercial customer that uses recycling containers must also keep a separate container for garbage at the same address; recyclables mixed with garbage are never allowed to be collected as recyclables. All recycling facilities in the city must meet the minimum criteria set by the Texas Health and Safety Code and the Texas Administrative Code.

The section separately regulates freestanding 'recycling boxes', containers used primarily to collect paper, aluminum, plastic or glass for donation-style recycling drives rather than curbside carts. Those boxes must stay closed except when someone is actively depositing material, must display the sponsoring organization's name, address and phone number on at least two sides, and must post instructions on what materials belong inside on at least two sides as well. They must be kept in good repair, clean and well-painted, meaning no visible wood grain on a wooden box or visible bare metal on a metal box.

Recycling boxes can never be placed in the city right-of-way, and they cannot be sited where they obstruct traffic sightlines or otherwise violate the city's vision-clearance ordinance. They are permitted only in specific commercial and industrial zoning districts: office, neighborhood service, general retail, commercial one, commercial office, commercial, central area, light industrial or heavy industrial. the morning after its scheduled collection day.
