Every registered Johns Creek hauler must provide weekly single-stream recycling, and residents are not required to separate their recyclables (Sec. 42-20). Recycling carts are provided by your hauler, and multi-family complexes must offer recycling to residents (Sec. 42-35).
Recycling is built into Johns Creek's solid waste rules. Under Sec. 42-20, each registered hauler must collect and dispose of recyclable materials, must collect the materials on the city's approved recycle list, and must provide single-stream service - meaning haulers cannot require residential customers to separate their recyclables. Sec. 42-19 sets once-a-week recycling as part of the residential basic level of service. For containers, Sec. 42-28 requires haulers to provide single-family homes a wheeled recycling cart in a choice of sizes (30-gallon or 65-gallon), and to provide a recycling bin for each multi-family unit; haulers must deliver, maintain, and replace these carts (Sec. 42-30). Sec. 42-35 establishes mandatory recycling at multi-family complexes and developments. Commercial customers may arrange separated recycling through private contracts with their hauler. Johns Creek also offers community drop-off options - for example, glass recycling at city locations - through its Public Works and Sustainability programs, separate from curbside hauler service. As with all solid waste service, residents arrange recycling through their chosen registered hauler, and the city does not set the price.
Residents are not penalized for how they sort recyclables, since service is single-stream. Haulers that fail to provide required recycling violate their registration and Chapter 42; enforcement falls under the city's general penalty (Sec. 1-7), up to $1,000.00 and/or six months.
