Sec. 62-63 of the North Port Code (Ord. 132-19) requires all generators of recyclable materials and yard waste within the City to separate recyclables and yard waste from other solid waste before disposal. Recycling is collected in a separate City-issued tote.
North Port's single-stream recycling tote accepts paper, cardboard, aluminum cans, steel cans, glass bottles, and most rigid plastic containers labeled #1, #2, and #5. Contamination (plastic bags, food waste, foam) can result in load rejection. Yard waste goes in a green-lid tote separately. Hazardous household waste must be taken to the Sarasota County HHW facility.
Disposing of recyclables or yard waste in the garbage stream violates Sec. 62-63 and is enforceable via Code Enforcement, though enforcement is typically educational unless contamination is severe.
