North Port sets its collection pattern in section 62-51 of the City Code. Residential solid waste is collected once a week, yard waste once a week, and recyclable materials once a week, but with a rotation that catches people out: the material type alternates, with paper products collected one week and commingled material the following week. Bulk waste is collected as scheduled by the solid waste division rather than on a fixed cycle. Containers are covered by two separate sections. Under section 62-48(a) every owner, tenant or occupant of a residential living unit must use containers of the size and type, and at the locations, the director may reasonably require, with the stated purpose of promoting sanitary, aesthetic and economic collection; yard waste containers are supplied by the owner, tenant, lessee or occupant rather than the city.

Under section 62-50(a) customers must have their solid waste, recycling and yard waste containers ready, easily accessible and available at the designated container pickup location BEFORE the collection day begins, the standard is readiness ahead of the day, not by a particular hour. The director determines all container pickup locations and may adjust them for operational efficiency, and any location change requires department approval under subsection (b)(1). How much gets taken is capped by section 62-52(a): on each collection day the city collects from each residential living unit all the solid waste that fits in the city automated container or containers assigned to that specific address, plus the privately-owned yard waste containers.

The section also imposes a maximum permissible residential container weight measured as the total gross weight of the loaded container including the container itself. Section 62-49 backs the scheme up by prohibiting placing solid waste in any street, alley or other public place, or on any private property whether you own it or not, except in proper containers for collection or with the express approval of the director, and separately bans throwing or depositing solid waste in any stream or body of water.
