Oakley residents receive weekly single-stream recycling collection in blue carts through Republic Services. Accepted materials include paper, cardboard, glass bottles/jars, metal cans, and rigid plastics labeled 1, 2, and 5. Contamination with food, liquids, or non-recyclable items can cause loads to be rejected.
Oakley's curbside recycling program accepts single-stream commingled recyclables in the blue Republic Services cart. Accepted items include clean paper (newspaper, magazines, office paper, junk mail), flattened cardboard boxes, paperboard (cereal/shoe boxes), glass bottles and jars (any color, rinsed), aluminum and steel food/beverage cans, and rigid plastic containers marked with resin codes #1 (PET - water bottles), #2 (HDPE - milk jugs, detergent bottles), and #5 (PP - yogurt tubs). Plastic bags, film plastic, foam polystyrene (Styrofoam), diapers, food waste, yard waste, batteries, electronics, needles, and textiles do NOT go in the blue cart. Plastic bags jam sorting machinery and should be returned to grocery store drop-off bins. Pizza boxes should be recycled only if grease-free; greasy portions go in organics. California Senate Bill 343 (2021) restricts the "chasing arrows" symbol to items truly recyclable in local programs. Republic Services conducts contamination monitoring, and carts with excessive non-recyclables may receive warning tags or be left uncollected. Electronics, batteries, paint, and other household hazardous waste can be taken to the Contra Costa County Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility in Martinez free of charge for residents.
