Apple Valley, CA Trash & Recycling: Yard Waste Collection (2026)

The Town folds yard waste into its broader organic-waste diversion program adopted under Ordinance No. 551 to satisfy the state's SB 1383 mandate, administered locally by the Town's contracted hauler and monitored by CalRecycle. Commercial businesses, including multifamily properties of five units or more, must subscribe to the Town's four-container collection service under § 6.20.200(a): a brown or beige container for food waste, a green container for source-separated green material, landscape and pruning waste, a blue container for recyclables, and a black container for everything else.

Businesses must give employees, tenants and customers access to properly labeled containers in every area where trash bins already sit, train staff annually on sorting, and let Town inspectors onto the property to confirm compliance under § 6.20.310. Single-family households handle yard trimmings the same way through the Town's three-container residential service at § 6.20.190, placing organic waste, which the Chapter's definitions section, § 6.20.010(tt), expressly includes landscape and pruning waste, in the green container rather than the trash. A generator that produces very little green waste can apply for a de minimis waiver under § 6.20.210(a) if organic material comes to less than 20 gallons a week, or 10 gallons for smaller accounts, and any generator lacking room for a green container can request a physical-space waiver under § 6.20.210(b); both waivers run five years and are reviewed by the Town Manager's designee. Property owners may also manage yard waste on-site or through a permitted community composting site instead of using the green container, under § 6.20.190(c).
