Hammond, IN Trash & Recycling: Yard Waste Collection (2026)

044 of the Hammond Code of Ordinances splits yard waste service into two tracks. 044(A), the city continues collecting tree leaves, grass clippings and plant stems from January 1 through December 31, but only if the material is contained in 30-gallon paper yard waste bags; plastic bags, grocery bags and cardboard boxes are explicitly not picked up. That collection coincides with the recycling schedule, and the bags have to go next to the recycling bin on the front curb rather than on the alley line, with leaves, clippings or other vegetative material barred from being raked onto the parkway or street gutter.

044(B) covers the bulkier stuff: large tree branches, trunks and bushes are collected year-round, but limbs and bushes must be cut into lengths no longer than 4 feet and tied into bundles no heavier than 50 pounds, while tree trunks are cut to a manageable size not exceeding 50 pounds, all placed on the alley line rather than the curb. Unlike the bagged materials, residents must call the Sanitation or Street Department to request a special pickup for branches, trunks and bushes rather than expecting a routine sweep.

044(D) bars all of this yard waste, whether bagged clippings or bundled branches, from going into a landfill at all, keeping it in the city's separate diversion stream instead.
