Lynwood, CA Animal Ordinances: Bird Protection (2026)

The prohibition appears in article 1 of chapter 8, the city's animal control and cruelty ordinance, alongside separate bans on animal fighting and baiting and on malicious impounding of another person's pet (subsections f and h). Because subsection g folds in "the laws of the state of California," enforcement tracks whatever species protections state and federal wildlife law already assign, so a bird-killing or nest-disturbance charge can be pursued locally without a freestanding city-specific protected species list. Lynwood contracts general law enforcement to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (Century Station) and animal-specific enforcement to an animal control officer, who under section 8-1.10 may remove an animal or bird from any premises found not being cared for in a proper and humane manner.

Violations of the code default to a misdemeanor under section 1-5 unless a provision states otherwise, punishable by a fine of up to one thousand dollars ($1,000.00) or up to six months in the Los Angeles County jail, or both, with each day of a continuing violation counted as a separate offense. Because chapter 8 does not carve out its own lesser penalty for subsection g, this misdemeanor default governs a Lynwood bird-killing or nest-destruction charge, a materially higher exposure than the flat-fee infractions written elsewhere in the same chapter.
