Eden Prairie, MN Animal Ordinances: Chickens & Livestock (2026)

Section 9.74, Subdivision 2 requires a chicken keeper to register with the City and pay a fee before bringing chickens onto a premises, followed by a City inspection of the coop, run and exercise yard before administrative approval. Subdivision 3 bans roosters entirely, giving 72 hours to remove one found on the property, caps most premises at 4 chickens (25 on Rural-zoned lots of 5 acres or more), requires coops kept clean under Minnesota Rule 1721.0320, subpart 1.B, and bars on-site slaughter anywhere but a retail establishment employing a butcher; dead chickens must be disposed of within 48 hours under Section 9.01, Subdivision 8.

Subdivision 4 restricts the use to the Rural and R-1 districts only, keeps coops and runs out of front or side yards, bans housing chickens in the dwelling or garage, requires the accessory-structure setbacks in Sections 11.10 and 11.11, Subdivision 3.B with a 10-foot lot-line minimum, keeps coops 50 feet from any other dwelling unit, and bars any part of a coop from shore impact zones or within 15 feet of a lake, pond, river, creek or stream. Subdivision 5 limits premises to one coop, 4 square feet of floor space per bird, a solid roof and a window, bans heat lamps, and caps runs and exercise yards at 120 square feet with predator-proof fencing.

Rural lots of 5 acres or more are exempt from registration, the slaughter ban, the run-size cap and the one-coop limit under Subdivision 7, as are pre-existing lawful farm-animal operations that have not stopped for a year.
