Fairfield allows up to three chickens, geese, ducks, or turkeys on residential lots of at least 5,000 square feet. Roosters are prohibited, and fowl must be confined to the owner's property at all times.
Fairfield Municipal Code Chapter 3 (Animals and Fowl) and Section 25.22.4.2 of the Zoning Ordinance govern the keeping of poultry and livestock within city limits. It is unlawful for any person to keep, board, or harbor more than three chickens, geese, ducks, turkeys, or similar fowl on a single residential property. Chicken keeping is only permitted on residential lots with a minimum area of 5,000 square feet. Roosters are not allowed in residential zones due to noise nuisance concerns. The city's nuisance provisions further prohibit any chickens, geese, ducks, turkeys, pheasants, doves, pigeons, squabs, similar fowl, or rabbits from running or flying at large or going onto the premises of other persons in the city. Larger livestock (horses, cows, goats, sheep, hogs) are generally restricted to agriculturally-zoned or larger-acreage parcels rather than typical residential lots. Owners must keep coops and enclosures sanitary and free of odors that could constitute a public nuisance under Chapter 27 (Community Preservation).
Violations are typically handled as nuisance abatement matters. Code Compliance may issue administrative citations starting with a warning, followed by escalating fines for continued non-compliance. Persistent violations can result in misdemeanor charges and orders to remove the animals.
