Greensboro Land Development Ordinance Section 30-5-2.63 permits poultry keeping in single-family (RS-40, RS-30, RS-20, RS-15, RS-12, RS-9, RS-7) and most multifamily (RM-5, RM-8, RM-12, RM-18) zoning districts. No special permit, approval, or registration is required. Lot size determines the maximum number: lots under 7,000 square feet may not keep chickens; lots between 7,000 and 12,000 square feet may keep up to 4 hens; lots over 12,000 square feet may keep up to 20 hens. No more than one animal over six months of age is permitted per 3,000 square feet on mid-sized lots. Roosters are prohibited. No poultry animals that make sounds clearly audible off-site are permitted. Structures must be located behind the rear wall of the principal building. Setbacks are 25 feet from property lines and 50 feet from neighboring dwellings on mid-sized lots, or 50 feet from property lines on large lots. Fencing is required for all poultry.
