Greensboro prohibits dogs at large on public property under Guilford County Sec. 5-9. Dogs may be loose on private property with owner permission. Animal Control enforces.
Guilford County Code Chapter 5 (Animals), Section 5-9, prohibits animals from running at large in the City of Greensboro. Dogs and cats cannot run at large on public property including streets, sidewalks, and parks. Dogs may run loose on private property only with the explicit permission of the property owner. Guilford County Animal Control is responsible for enforcing state laws and county animal ordinances in the City of Greensboro and the Town of Jamestown. Section 5-10 declares an animal running at large that disturbs the rights, threatens the safety, or damages property of the general public to be a public nuisance. North Carolina does not have a statewide leash law but N.C.G.S. 67-12 authorizes counties and cities to adopt local leash ordinances. Animal Control can be reached through Guilford County Animal Services. Dogs in off-leash areas of designated Greensboro parks must remain under voice control.
Animals at large may be impounded by Animal Control. Owners subject to fines and impound fees. Public nuisance violations carry additional penalties.
