Idaho Falls City Code 5-5-3(D) allows backyard fowl (chickens, quail, ducks, geese). A lot of at least 5,000 sq ft may keep six fowl over 12 weeks old, plus one more per additional 1,250 sq ft, up to 12 total. Roosters (male fowl) are prohibited beyond 12 weeks from hatch. Coops must sit at least 25 feet from neighboring dwellings.
Idaho Falls City Code Title 5, Chapter 5 (Animals), Section 5-5-3(D) governs keeping chickens, quail, ducks, and geese (defined collectively as 'fowl' in 5-5-1, which excludes peafowl, guinea fowl, ostriches, and emus). A person may keep six (6) fowl more than twelve (12) weeks from hatch on a lot of not less than 5,000 square feet, plus one additional mature fowl for each additional 1,250 square feet, up to a total of twelve (12) mature fowl per lot. Up to twenty-five (25) fowl twelve weeks or younger may be kept temporarily on a 5,000-sq-ft lot if not intended for sale and not a commercial agricultural use. Section 5-5-3(D)(3) makes it unlawful to keep male fowl (roosters) within City limits beyond twelve weeks from hatch. Coops and runs must be at least twenty-five feet (25') from any dwelling other than the keeper's (5-5-3(D)(4)). Peafowl, guinea fowl, emus, ostriches, and cassowaries are prohibited outside the Idaho Falls Zoo (5-5-3(D)(5)). Eggs from permitted fowl may not be sold for profit unless allowed by the Zoning Code, and fowl meat may not be sold for profit (5-5-3(G)). Animals must be kept on premises (5-5-3(J)). Domesticated turkeys (5-5-3(E)) and rabbits (5-5-3(F)) are separately regulated.
Keeping fowl beyond the lot-size allowances, harboring roosters past twelve weeks, or siting coops closer than 25 feet to a neighboring dwelling violates Section 5-5-3 and is enforced as a Title 5 animal violation. Selling eggs or fowl meat for profit without zoning authorization is also prohibited under 5-5-3(G). General nuisance and noise provisions still apply per 5-5-3(K).
