Santa Ana restricts the keeping of wild, exotic, dangerous, or non-domestic animals under SAMC Chapter 5. Permits are required for any exotic or wild animal, and many species are prohibited outright under both city and California Department of Fish and Wildlife regulations.
Under SAMC Chapter 5 and Orange County animal control ordinances, it is unlawful to keep any wild, exotic, dangerous, or non-domestic animal without first applying for and receiving the appropriate license or permit. California law (Title 14, CCR Β§671) prohibits possession of numerous exotic species including most primates, large cats, bears, wolves, venomous reptiles, and alligators without special permits that are generally not issued to private individuals. The city may also restrict animals that pose a nuisance, health hazard, or safety risk to the community. Exotic animal permits, where available, require proof of adequate enclosure, liability insurance, and veterinary care arrangements.
Keeping prohibited exotic animals is a misdemeanor under California law. Violations may result in fines, confiscation of the animal, and criminal charges. City code enforcement may also issue administrative citations.
