Shoreline, WA Animal Ordinances: Exotic Pets (2026)

Subsection I of § 20.40.240 is Shoreline's residential prohibited-animals list, layered on top of the exotic-animal ban in SMC Title 6, Animal Control Regulations, which the zoning code cross-references rather than restates. The local zoning list bars four categories that might otherwise be mistaken for ordinary small livestock or fowl: swine once they exceed 120 pounds or grow taller than 20 inches, all roosters (hens remain allowed up to the numeric caps in subsection D), peacocks and peahens, and three fur-bearing species, mink, nutria and foxes.

Because the size threshold for swine is measured in pounds and height rather than species, a small pig kept as a pet can lawfully grow only up to that limit before it becomes a prohibited animal under this section, regardless of how the owner classifies it. Subsection H gives the Director authority to categorize any animal that does not clearly fit the code's existing size classes, based on its similarity to a listed category and its impact on neighboring properties, which can bring a borderline exotic pet within the ban.

Subsection J exempts only service animals as defined in SMC Title 6 and temporary uses such as goats brought in for vegetation management, so neither exemption reaches the animals listed in subsection I. All animal keeping, prohibited or permitted, must otherwise meet the general containment and odor-control standards in subsection K.
