Pontiac, MI Building Safety: Childcare Center Rules (2026)

Section 2.511 of the Pontiac Zoning Ordinance sets six conditions for a child care center or day care center use. Section 2.511(A) requires the building's design to be harmonious in scale, size, character, and location with the predominant building type in the surrounding zone. Section 2.511(B) fixes hours of operation at no more than 16 hours in a 24-hour period, confined to the window between 6:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. Section 2.511(C) requires the center to be registered with or licensed by the State of Michigan and to meet the state's minimum standards.

Section 2.511(D) requires an outdoor play area of at least 1,200 square feet, secured and screened from abutting residential uses by a fence or natural barrier at least 48 inches tall; the Planning Commission may accept an off-site recreational facility instead if the applicant documents State approval of that substitution. Section 2.511(E) requires adequate space for employee parking and for pick-up and drop-off that avoids pedestrian-vehicle conflict and keeps traffic flowing on public streets. Section 2.511(F) requires frontage on, and direct vehicle access to, a street classified as an A or B street, with access to lower-classification C streets limited to secondary access needed for health and safety.

Together these standards route child care centers toward Pontiac's higher-capacity streets and away from residential-scale roads, while tying every operational detail back to the State of Michigan's separate licensing requirements for the facility itself.
