It is unlawful to render an installed alarm inoperable by breaking it, painting over it, taping over it, disabling it, or pulling the battery: ordinary battery replacement is exempted. Owners must replace any alarm reported stolen, missing, or disabled within five days of notice from the occupant, and occupants must test, maintain, and replace batteries at least every six months and must notify the owner in writing if an alarm is compromised.
