Hamden, CT Building Safety: Electrical Permits (2026)

Section 150.15's supplementary provisions set two sequencing rules for electrical work in Hamden. First, no wiring may be installed in a new structure until all rough plumbing and rough heating work is already in place, so the electrical trade cannot get ahead of the other trades on a new build. Second, for swimming pool installations specifically, the electrical permit must be applied for by a licensed electrician before the Building Department will accept a structural permit for the pool, tying pool construction to a properly licensed electrical filing from the start.

The permit itself is priced under § 150.07(A): electrical work is billed at $24 for the first $1,000 of estimated cost and $24 for each additional $1,000 or fraction of it, on top of the base building permit fee in § 150.06. Section 150.01 separately adopts the State of Connecticut Building Code by reference, with three copies kept on file with the town clerk, so the substantive electrical construction standards themselves come from the state code rather than a locally written electrical code. Sign installations, by contrast, need zoning office approval under § 150.15(C) before any wiring permit for a sign can issue, showing the same sequencing approach applied outside the pool context.

All of these permits run through the Building Department, which under § 150.04 will not approve any electrical application until the applicant certifies that no delinquent property taxes or sewer use fees are owed on the property.
