Hamden, CT Parking Rules: Commercial & Oversized Vehicles (2026)

Section 70.34(B)(1) of the Hamden Code of Ordinances bars any person from parking or leaving standing a commercial motor vehicle on any town street, or portion of one, in a residential district, defined as an area zoned for residential use under the Hamden zoning regulations and shown on the Hamden zoning map. Where a street forms the boundary between a residential and non-residential district, the ban applies only to the residential side. The rule exempts a commercial vehicle parked to make pick-ups or deliveries to or from a home or structure in the district, to deliver materials for repair, alteration, remodeling or construction of such a building, or for loading and unloading, and it also exempts school buses on or between routes, town, state or utility vehicles performing street or utility work, and firefighting apparatus or other emergency vehicles performing emergency or routine service.

Section 70.34(B)(2) defines a COMMERCIAL MOTOR VEHICLE as one with a gross vehicle weight rating of 11,000 pounds or more that is designed or used to transport passengers or property, a threshold that reaches box trucks and larger delivery vehicles but not most personal pickup trucks. Under § 70.99(E), any violation of § 70.34 carries a fine of not less than $25 nor more than $100, and a police officer may issue a citation carrying the town's then-current maximum parking fine, due within 15 days before an equal late penalty and possible arrest warrant attach.
