Hamden, CT Fire Regulations: Outdoor Burning (2026)

Section 93.10 defines an outdoor fire, for purposes of sections 93.10 through 93.16, as any fire in the open air or outside a building set to burn woodland, grassland, swampland, leaves or forest debris; to dispose of a structure, marine or aircraft, vehicles or their debris; or to dispose of papers, rubbish or other combustibles. Section 93.11 then sets five rules: no person may kindle an outdoor fire except in an approved incinerator without the fire marshal's permission, which the marshal may deny if conditions are unsafe for burning; no outdoor fire may be kindled between sunset and sunrise; no outdoor fire may be left unattended at any time except in an approved incinerator; every outdoor fire must be extinguished before sunset; and outdoor burning of garbage is prohibited outright.

Sections 93.12 and 93.13 add incinerator specifications, including a spark arrester with openings no larger than 1/4 inch square and a minimum 20-foot clearance from any building, property line or combustible, enforced by the fire marshal. Cooking fires are carved out of the whole subchapter under section 93.14. Section 93.16 lets the fire marshal or fire department arrest and prosecute violators and makes clear the penalty in section 93.99(B) applies: $100 for each violation of sections 93.11 through 93.13.
