Littleton, CO Building Safety: Electrical Permits (2026)

Littleton City Code § 4-1-1 adopts a full list of building-related codes for regulation of buildings and structures in the city, and item (L) names NFPA 70, the 2026 Edition of the National Electric Code, published by the National Fire Protection Association, as one of them. The section states that the most recently printed edition of each adopted code, the NEC included, is what the city actually administers, and that copies are open for public inspection at the Building Inspection Division and the City Clerk's office.

Unlike the Building, Energy Conservation, Existing Building, Fuel Gas, Mechanical, Plumbing, Property Maintenance, Residential and Wildland-Urban Interface Codes, the NEC does not get its own itemized local-amendment section in § 4-1-5; it is adopted straight, so the model code's own permitting and enforcement provisions apply as written. Fees for any permit or inspection required under this chapter, including electrical work, are set by City Council resolution under § 4-1-7. Separately, Littleton City Code § 3-16-4(B)(1) requires anyone performing electrical work to hold a City of Littleton Electrical Contractor registration certificate: the code defines that scope as installing, altering, repairing, renovating, maintaining or adding to electrical wiring, appliances or apparatus used for electrical light, heat, power or signal systems within or affixed to a building or structure.

Registration certificate holders must obtain permits before work begins and must present their registration when the Building Division or a peace officer asks for it.
