Milton, WI Building Safety: Electrical Permits (2026)

Milton Code of Ordinances Sec. 10-212 bars installing or altering electric wiring or other equipment without first securing a permit from the building inspector, with a narrow exception for repairs or replacements of broken or defective sockets, switches or base receptacles. The permit application must be on a city form stating clearly the work planned, the alterations to be made, and the equipment and materials to be used; any later deviation from that plan must go back to the building inspector for approval. Sec. 10-211 ties all electrical work, including wiring and other equipment placement, to Wis.

Admin. Code ch. SPS 316, the state electrical code adopted by the Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services, plus all amendments and revisions, which the city adopts by reference under Ord. No. 464, § I, effective June 4, 2019. Inspection follows a two-stage process under Sec. 10-213: after roughing in wiring, and before the work is covered, the person doing the work must notify the building inspector, who inspects within 48 hours excluding weekends and holidays. Upon completion, the inspector again inspects and, finding the work conforms to the National Electrical Code and state electrical code, posts notice of compliance at the job site; for new or temporary services, the inspector issues a certificate of inspection to the utility company.

Cited violations must be corrected within 30 days of written notification, and no person may enclose or use wiring or equipment until it has been inspected and approved. Sec. 10-214 sets permit fees by council resolution, and Sec. 10-215 clarifies the city assumes no liability for defects merely by inspecting or certifying work.
