New Rochelle, NY Building Safety: Electrical Permits (2026)

Section 111-8, Building permit required, states the general rule the City applies to electrical work: no person, firm or corporation may commence alteration, installation or any work that must conform to the State Code without first filing an application with the Building Official and obtaining a permit, except where the code specifically exempts the work. Section 111-3B reinforces this for electrical systems in particular, making it unlawful to use electric wiring or any other equipment controlled by the code until the Building Official has issued the proper certificate.

Electrical permits are issued by the Bureau of Buildings, and § 111-42C(5) directs that their fee follows the schedule in Chapter 133, Fees. That schedule, last amended December 13, 2016 by Ordinance No. 250-2016, sets the electrical permit fee at $100 for a new or increased electrical service, $120 for a new one- or two-family dwelling, $250 for the first unit of a new multifamily dwelling plus $100 for each additional unit, $250 for a new commercial building's first 20 outlets or fixtures plus $5 for each outlet or fixture above 20, and $100 for alterations covering up to 20 outlets.

Resolution 147-2008 separately waived electrical permit fees for power-factor technology work funded through the NYSERDA program. Under § 111-9C, the Building Official may waive the permit requirement at his discretion for minor alterations costing less than $10,000, but only if electrical, plumbing and heating systems are not affected.
