Sun Prairie, WI Building Safety: Electrical Permits (2026)

010 adopts Wisconsin Administrative Code Chapter SPS 316 by reference to govern all electrical work installed, altered or repaired within the City of Sun Prairie, including future amendments to that state code. 050 requires a permit from the electrical inspector before any electrical wiring in new construction or building alterations, and the inspector will not issue one unless the applicant proves they were hired to do the work and will be responsible for performing it under city ordinance and state law. 040, issued after the electrical inspector determines the applicant is competent; licenses expire each January 1 and cost $50 annually, or $20 on an inactive basis.

The inspector may instead issue a homeowner a permit to wire their own single-family residence if the homeowner demonstrates competence in the applicable rules. 070 lists specific rewiring requirements for existing residential buildings. 060, with a final inspection required once wiring is complete and at least 48 hours' notice expected for any inspection. 030, and any license or permit can be revoked by the common council for violations or hazardous installations.
