Berwyn, IL Building Safety: Elevator Maintenance (2026)

Berwyn regulates elevator upkeep through inspection fees in § 1444.03(A) of the Berwyn Code of Ordinances, in the chapter titled Building and Related Fees. The table lists elevators, escalators, lifts, hoists and dumbwaiters together, so every one of those conveyances is a unit. The annual inspection fee is $100 per unit, and each additional reinspection is $50. A building with three elevators and a dumbwaiter is therefore billed for four units each year. The reinspection charge matches the $50 re-inspection fee that § 1443.08(D) sets for building work found not ready for inspection.

The section itself sets fees and does not print inspection standards or maintenance intervals. The fee table was last amended by Ord. 26-02, passed 2-10-2026, and the section's history also lists Ord. 98-35 (1998) and Ord. 05-28 (2005).

The same table prices other periodic inspections. Gondolas and refuse containers on public rights-of-way, including alleys, cost $36 per month or any part of a month. Nonresidential canopies and awnings run $35 for 30 linear feet or less, $50 for 31 to 50 feet, $75 for 51 to 100 feet and $100 for 101 feet or more. Signs carry a minimum annual inspection fee of $35 per zoning lot.

Elevators also connect to the dangerous-building rules in Chapter 1462. Under § 1462.01(G), a building with inadequate facilities for egress in case of fire or panic, or with insufficient stairways, elevators, fire escapes or means of communication, meets the definition of a dangerous building, which § 1462.02 declares a public nuisance to be repaired, vacated or demolished. Installing or altering equipment regulated by the Building Code requires a permit under § 1443.01(A)(5), and the permit fee schedule appears in § 1444.01.
