Noblesville, IN Building Safety: Elevator Maintenance (2026)

Noblesville's Fire Prevention Code, Chapter 92, adopted by Ord. 50-10-09 on October 27, 2009, requires elevator key boxes under § 92.064 whenever local, state, or national code makes one mandatory. The owner or a duly authorized agent must contact the Noblesville Fire Department before installation so the Fire Chief, or a designee, can approve where the box goes; boxes typically serve secured community pools, apartment buildings, and other Class 1 structures covered by the code. After the box goes up, the owner must again contact the Fire Department to load it with the elevator door key, the elevator equipment room key, and the Fire Department's emergency access elevator control keys, so responders can reach a stalled car or the machine room without forcing doors.

Section 92.002 makes the whole chapter supplemental to the Indiana Fire Code, Indiana Building Code, and other state fire-safety codes, and applies to existing buildings' maintenance of these life-safety features, not just new construction. The neighboring §§ 92.060-92.063 use the same Knox-brand hardware for gates, alert decals, and FDC caps, so an elevator key box installed without prior Fire Chief approval, or without matching the Knox system used department-wide, is out of compliance. The Fire Prevention Bureau's Inspection Division administers approvals and can require corrections during any inspection authorized under § 92.170.
