Under the zoning ordinance's General Industrial District use provisions, an adult entertainment establishment is a conditional-category special use subject to layered distance rules rather than an outright ban. 330 bars locating one less than 1,000 feet from a preservation district, residence conservation district, residence district or community facility district, and less than 1,000 feet from any apartment dwelling, dwelling, day care service (home or institutional), public park, school, place of worship or playground. A separate dispersion rule bars siting one within 1,000 feet of another adult entertainment establishment, preventing clustering even inside the industrial zone where the use is otherwise allowed.

The code specifies exactly how each distance is measured: the buffer from districts and sensitive uses runs in a straight line from the establishment's main public entrance to the nearest zoning district boundary or the nearest property line of the protected use, while the dispersion distance between two adult businesses is measured wall-to-wall, from the closest exterior structural wall of each. Existing operators are not grandfathered indefinitely. Any adult entertainment establishment lawfully operating when the ordinance took effect had to apply to the department of code administration and neighborhood affairs for a certificate of nonconforming adult entertainment establishment within 45 days of the effective date.

Even with that certificate, the nonconforming use had to be discontinued within one year of the effective date, meaning the spacing standards eventually apply citywide with no permanent exceptions for pre-existing locations.
