Bossier City, LA Business Licensing & Operations: Auto Repair on Residential Property (2026)

Section 6.6.9 of the Unified Development Code applies its home-repair restrictions across every residential zoning district in Bossier City: R-A, R-E, R-LD, R-MD, R-HD, R-MHS, and R-MHP. The threshold rule is ownership: the vehicle or boat being worked on has to belong to someone who actually lives at the residence, and outright commercial repair, meaning fixing other people's vehicles for pay, is prohibited in all of those districts. Homeowners running a small side business from the garage face a hard numeric cap too: no more than one commercial motor vehicle can be repaired, serviced, maintained, or even stored for future servicing at a time, and that one vehicle still has to be owned or driven by a resident of the house.

The code also controls where the work happens and what it looks like from the street. All vehicle parts, components, and tools have to stay inside an enclosed garage or accessory structure, out of view of the general public, so a car up on blocks or an engine on a tarp in the driveway does not comply. Painting or body repair cannot happen outdoors at all, and any overspray drifting onto a neighboring property or nearby residence is itself a violation, independent of where the work took place.

Section 6.6.9.E adds a documentation requirement: the vehicle being serviced must be registered or titled to the resident or one of the residents, and a code enforcement official may demand proof of that registration or title on the spot. Together the rules are built to keep home mechanic work personal and low-key rather than letting a residential garage operate as an unlicensed repair shop, which instead falls under Chapter 22's business licensing and occupational-license requirements if the operator wants to run it commercially.
