Moore, OK Business Licensing & Operations: Auto Repair on Residential Property (2026)

Moore's home occupation chapter draws a sharp line between light home-based work and automotive trades. Sec 9-1502, part of Chapter 9-15 adopted by Ordinance 970(21) on June 7, 2021, prohibits 'repair, building or servicing of vehicles' and, separately, 'painting of vehicles, trailers or boats' from the list of activities a resident may conduct as a home occupation. The same prohibited-use list bars large appliance repair, upholstering, cabinet and machine shops, and 'small engine repair and any use which may include hazardous chemicals,' reflecting the city's concern about noise, fluids, fumes and traffic that automotive work brings to a residential street.

Even for the activities Sec 9-1502 does allow, the section separately bars electrical or mechanical equipment that changes a structure's fire rating, interferes with neighbors' television or radio reception, or causes voltage fluctuations off the property, standards an auto repair operation would be hard-pressed to meet. Someone wanting to run an auto repair or auto body business in Moore instead needs a location zoned for that use and a business license under Part 9 of the City Code rather than a home occupation exemption. Sec 9-1504 puts enforcement in the hands of the Community Development Director, who reviews complaints about traffic, noise or other neighborhood impacts, can order a nonconforming home business to cease, and must give the operator 10 days to respond in writing before ruling, subject to appeal to the Board of Adjustment.
