In the City-Parish Unified Development Code, a home occupation is an accessory use of a home that does not change the residential character. It is a Conditional (C) use in most residential districts and must meet the Section 9.4.5 standards, including a 22,500-square-foot minimum lot.
EBR UDC Chapter 19 (Definitions)
Home Occupation: An accessory use of a residential dwelling unit for a business, occupation, or activity conducted for financial gain that is conducted on the property, but does not change the essential character of the residential use.
The City-Parish Unified Development Code is blunt about home occupation signs: no signage may be erected. Nothing may be done to make the building appear as anything other than a dwelling, so exterior business advertising for a home occupation is prohibited.

Louisiana's cottage food law lets residents prepare low-risk foods at home for sale without meeting the Sanitary Code's facility rules, as long as gross annual sales stay under $30,000. Each item must be labeled that it was not made in a licensed or regulated facility.
La. R.S. 40:4.9
This Section shall not apply to any preparer of low-risk foods made at a home for sale, whose gross annual sales equal thirty thousand dollars or more... [preparers] shall affix to any such food offered for sale a label which clearly indicates that the food was not produced in a licensed or regulated facility.
The City-Parish UDC defines a Day Care Center as a facility caring for seven or more unrelated individuals for part of a day. Larger day cares are zoned separately from home occupations, and any child day care is also licensed by the Louisiana Department of Education.

Day Care Center: any facility operated by a person, society, agency, corporation, institution, or any other group for the purpose of providing care, protection, and guidance to seven or more individuals who are not related to one another or to the operator... but are cared for there for only part of a 24-hour day.
A home occupation is a Conditional use approved through the City-Parish, subject to all the Section 9.4.5 conditions: appointment-only visits between 7am and 7pm, a resident occupying the home, no signage, dwelling-only appearance, a 22,500-square-foot lot, and not in a residential subdivision.

Home Occupations may be established subject to all the following requirements: A. Visits must occur between 7:00 am and 7:00 pm and must be by appointment only... C. No signage shall be erected... E. Minimum lot area of 22,500 square feet. F. Not allowed in a recognized residential subdivision.
