In unincorporated Wicomico County, building a residential swimming pool requires a permit from the Chief Building Official under the county's International Residential Code amendments. Only small prefabricated above-ground pools under 24 inches deep and 5,000 gallons skip the permit step. Everything else, including in-ground pools, needs an approved application before construction starts.
