Section 11-1429 of the Illinois Vehicle Code applies to diesel-powered vehicles over 8,000 pounds operating in Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry, and Will counties. Drivers may not idle more than 10 minutes in any 60-minute period. Exceptions exist for traffic, sleeper-berth heating below 32 degrees or above 80 degrees, repairs, emergency vehicles, and powering work equipment. Cook County DPH and Illinois EPA share enforcement; CCDPH responds to neighborhood complaints in suburban Cook. Chicago has its own stricter 3-minute rule under MCC 9-64-180.
