Huntington, NY Environmental Rules: Vehicle Idling Restrictions (2026)

Section TC3-3(F), part of the Article II parking and standing restrictions in the Town's Traffic Code, forbids three acts in the same clause: parking, standing, or leaving a vehicle idling on a sidewalk, walkway, median divider or island, or at any spot that is not a designated parking space. Because the section reaches idling specifically, a driver cannot sit with the engine running in a travel lane, on a median, or on a sidewalk while waiting for a passenger or a delivery; the vehicle has to be in a marked space to be there at all.

The prohibition sits alongside the Article's other restrictions on fire-hydrant clearance, roadside double-parking, intersection stopping and driveway blocking, all enforced the same way. Under § TC3-1, the restrictions in this chapter give way only when a vehicle must stop to avoid a traffic conflict or in compliance with a police officer's direction or an official traffic-control device, so there is no exception for a quick errand or a running engine while parked illegally. This provision governs only the unincorporated part of the Town of Huntington; the Villages of Huntington Bay, Lloyd Harbor, Northport and Asharoken enforce their own separate codes and are not covered by § TC3-3.
