Blue Springs, MO Fence Regulations: Height Limits (2026)

Blue Springs regulates fence height as part of the buffering and screening standards in Chapter 407 of the UDC. Front fences, meaning any fence placed in front of the front building line, are limited to four feet under Section 407.040(D)(3)(a), except that detached house estate-lot building types fronting a collector or arterial street may build metal picket fences up to six feet tall. Front fences must also use ornamental or decorative materials matching the principal building and must stay at least thirty-three percent open, unless the fence screens a parking area.

Rear and side fences located behind the front building line are capped at six feet in TF (Two-Family) and less intensive zoning districts and eight feet in every other district under Section 407.040(D)(3)(b). Corner lots carry an added restriction: any rear or side fence within eight feet of the right-of-way must meet the four-foot front-fence standard and cannot create a sight-distance obstruction under the corner visibility rule in Section 407.020(D)(3). Additional design standards in Section 407.040(D)(3)(c) cap every property at no more than two fence materials or styles, require the finished side to face outward with posts hidden, and set the fence's setback at either within six inches of the property line or at least three feet back.

Fences crossing a drainage easement need Public Works approval, and fences in a Historic or Conservation District follow the same height rules with an added transparency requirement on corner street-side yards.
