Grand Junction, CO Fence Regulations: Height Limits (2026)

Grand Junction Municipal Code § 21.05.090 measures fence height from the ground at the fence's location and bars regrading solely to gain height, though up to two extra inches is allowed for drainage clearance under the fence. Pillars or other support posts may rise one foot above the maximum fence height, but only at intervals no closer than eight feet apart, so a run of closely spaced tall pillars is not permitted. In front yard setbacks citywide, fences are capped at 30 inches, rising to 48 inches only if the portion above 30 inches is at least two-thirds open (such as picket-style construction).

Outside the front yard setback, residential fences may run up to six feet; going higher inside a required principal-structure setback needs an Administrative Adjustment under GJMC § 21.02.040(c), a discretionary review by Community Development rather than a permit issued as of right. On corner lots, the backyard fence segment running along the side property line on the street side may also reach six feet, but the Grand Junction City Engineer must sign off on placement of any fence to preserve sight distance at intersections, and construction along that line is subject to TEDS (Title 29) engineering standards, which cover the sight distance triangle at intersections.
