Grand Junction, CO Fence Regulations: Material Restrictions (2026)

Grand Junction Municipal Code § 21.05.090(c) requires fences and walls to be built of materials the Director approves, then lists acceptable materials as wire, wrought iron, plastic, wood, and other materials with a similar look. Inside the Downtown Core, that list narrows further: fences there may only be wrought iron, PVC vinyl, or wood, keeping the district's fencing visually consistent. On the prohibited side, the code bars visible glass, tires, razor wire and concertina wire, or unconventional salvaged materials or similar materials, protecting neighbors and pedestrians from hazardous or unsightly barriers.

Electric fencing is carved out as an exception where it is used to contain large animals, recognizing agricultural and rural-residential uses within city limits. The Director retains discretion to approve additional materials for secure facilities or critical facilities under § 21.05.090(c)(4), a narrower allowance aimed at higher-security sites rather than typical residential yards. Separately, in Mixed-Use and nonresidential zone districts outside the Downtown Core, § 21.05.090(e)(3) allows the addition of not more than three strands of barbed wire on a fence, and specifies that those strands are not counted toward the fence's maximum height calculation, an accommodation not extended to residential fences.
