Hoboken, NJ Fence Regulations: Height Limits (2026)

City Code § 196-28, Walls and fences, sets Hoboken's baseline fence and wall height at six feet without any required setback from the lot line. A property owner who wants a taller fence or wall can build one, but only by setting it back from the lot line one additional foot for every foot of height above six feet, so an eight-foot fence would need to sit two feet off the line. That trade-off has a hard ceiling, however: along the boundary between a Residential (R) District and any other zoning district, such as the Central Business District or an Industrial District, no fence or wall may exceed eight feet in height under any circumstance, regardless of how far it is set back.

The rule sits in Article VIII, Supplemental Lot, Height and Yard Regulations, alongside Hoboken's other yard and accessory-structure standards, and it applies citywide to every zoning district rather than to one neighborhood. Because the section doesn't distinguish between front, side and rear fencing, the six-foot base height and the setback trade-off apply the same way no matter where on the lot the fence sits, unless a separate provision, such as corner sight-triangle rules enforced by the Division of Zoning for traffic visibility, independently restricts height near an intersection.
