Hoboken, NJ Noise Ordinances: Decibel Limits (2026)

Section 133-7A bars anyone from operating a sound source in such a way that it equals or exceeds the limits in Tables I, II, or III when measured at or within the real property line of the receiving property. Table I sets the outdoor A-weighted limit at a residential receiving property, or the residential portion of a multiuse property, at 65 decibels between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. and 50 decibels between 10:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m., while a commercial, public service, or community service receiving property gets a flat 65-decibel ceiling around the clock.

Table II applies the same structure indoors, at 55 decibels by day and 40 decibels at night for residential receivers, when the source and receptor share a common or abutting wall, floor, or ceiling on the same parcel. Table III adds octave-band sound pressure limits by frequency for sources with a strong tonal component. Section 133-7B separately caps impulsive sound, a single pressure peak or burst under one second, at 80 decibels around the clock, though impulsive sound repeating four or more times an hour is instead measured against the continuous limits in Tables I and II. Construction and demolition activity is exempt from all three tables except as restricted by the hours rule in Section 133-9.
