Hoboken, NJ Parking Rules: Preferential Parking Districts (2026)

Under Hoboken City Code § 141A-1, the City Council designates the streets of Hoboken "permit parking only" at all times, with exceptions only for metered spaces and areas signed "resident permit parking only." Section 141A-2 puts the Hoboken Parking Utility (HPU), under its Director, in charge of the resident permit: a Hoboken resident must show a valid New Jersey driver's license reflecting a Hoboken address and a current New Jersey vehicle registration matching that address to qualify for a permit on a vehicle weighing no more than 2.5 tons.

A resident who can prove Hoboken residency but not vehicle ownership can still get a permit, but at a fee of $700 per year per vehicle, capped at three vehicles per household. Permits run one year from purchase and must be renewed annually with fresh proof of residency and ownership. Each permit is tied to one vehicle and one license plate, and the holder must keep that plate unobstructed and visible; a plate or vehicle change must be reported to the Parking Utility. Under Subsection F, one side of every designated street carries a round-the-clock resident permit parking only restriction (except where metered), valid only for vehicles linked to a current permit and marked by posted signage.

Only vehicles with a current, valid resident permit may occupy those spaces; other vehicles, absent a specific Parking Utility endorsement, cannot park there for any reason. The Parking Utility can revoke a permit under § 141A-6 for misuse, such as displaying it on an unauthorized vehicle.
