Hoboken, NJ Parking Rules: Overnight Parking (2026)

Chapter 141A, adopted January 6, 2010 by Ordinance No. Z-25 and amended repeatedly through 2026, makes permit parking the default rule for Hoboken's streets. Section 141A-1 designates all city streets permit parking only, with the only carve-outs being metered spaces, areas separately marked resident permit parking only, or other posted signage. Section 141A-2A requires a resident parking permit, in a form set by the Director of the Parking Utility, for any Hoboken resident's vehicle weighing no more than 2.5 tons to park in a resident permit area.

To get one, § 141A-2B requires a valid New Jersey driver's license showing a Hoboken address, and § 141A-2C requires a matching New Jersey vehicle registration; residents who can prove Hoboken residency but not vehicle ownership can still qualify by paying $700 per year per vehicle, for up to three vehicles per household. Permits expire one year from purchase and must be renewed with fresh proof of residency and ownership under § 141A-2D, and each permit is locked to one vehicle and one license plate, which the holder must keep updated with the Parking Utility under § 141A-2E.

Section 141A-2F makes resident-only zones effective 24 hours a day, seven days a week, on one side of every designated street, except where meters apply, and § 141A-2G bars any vehicle without a current, valid resident permit from parking there at any time, with limited exceptions the Parking Utility specifically endorses.
