Irving, TX Fence Regulations: Height Limits (2026)

Irving's fence code, adopted by Ordinance 2018-10044 and codified at Chapter 15 of the Code of Civil and Criminal Ordinances, sets height limits that differ by yard location. Section 15-9 requires vertical support posts and gates to extend no more than six inches above the top of the fence, and any fence sitting inside a corner lot's vision triangle is capped at 30 inches with at least 50 percent through-visibility so drivers can see cross traffic. Section 15-10 limits front-yard fences to 48 inches with the same 50 percent visibility standard, though a fence in a district that allows outdoor storage as a permitted use can rise to 10 feet if it stays at least 10 feet back from any street right-of-way and clear of the required landscaped interior parkway.

Section 15-11 sets the rear- and side-yard limit at 8 feet in residential districts and 10 feet in non-residential districts. Reverse frontage lots face an added restriction under Section 15-12: a fence in the side yard next to a street right-of-way cannot sit closer than 15 feet to the side property line unless the property is zoned non-residential and the fence stays outside 10 feet of that line. A fence permit is mandatory under Section 15-3 before any fence is built, repaired, or replaced, though the fee is waived for residential repairs or new sections of 50 linear feet or less.

The Building Inspections Division reviews plans, and the director can suspend or revoke a permit issued in error. Owners seeking taller fences than the code allows must go through the special fence project plan process before the Planning and Zoning Commission and City Council.
