Irving, TX Parking Rules: RV & Boat Parking (2026)

2(a)(1) of the Irving Unified Development Code sets three surface options for storing a camper top, motor home, RV, boat or travel trailer on a residential lot: a concrete or asphalt pad strong enough to bear the vehicle's weight; a gravel or stone surface at least two inches deep with a containment border, located behind the front wall of the house; or an area behind the front wall screened on all sides by a six-foot blind fence or a building wall. Whichever surface is used, it must connect to the street, alley or driveway by a similarly improved path at least nine feet wide, or by two parallel fourteen-inch-wide ribbons of paving; a driveway widened to reach a gravel storage area must itself be paved in concrete or asphalt.

2(a)(2) carves out a washing exception: a vehicle, boat or trailer sitting off the approved pad is not treated as "stored" while it is actively being washed. 2(a)(4) limits residential occupancy of a parked RV or travel trailer to no more than three consecutive days, closing off long-term living in a driveway unit. These standards sit inside the same outside-storage performance section that separately restricts inoperative-vehicle storage and commercial-vehicle parking on residential lots. Irving's code compliance officers, under the Planning and Inspections Department, enforce the standard and issue a correction notice ahead of a citation when a parking area fails the surface, screening or connection requirement.
